New Initiative Highlights Wharton's Growing Commitment to Non-Profits

Business schools continue to extend their reach beyond traditional business disciplines into the non-profit arena. One striking new initiative launched this academic year is The Wharton Non-Profit Board Leadership Program (NPBLP). NPBLP selected, trained, and placed 10 Wharton students on the Board of Directors of Philadelphia non-profit organizations, providing them with rare access to MBA talent.  NPBLP ‘s contributions have been so well received that it plans to expand next year and further strengthen the ties between the university and the local community.

Time CEO Anne Moore Advises Women to Forget Dilbert's View of Business

Women Beware: business careers can be "rich and wonderful" and do not mean you are confined to a cubicle with strictly routine, uncreative tasks. Ann Moore, chairman and CEO of Time, Inc. shared this message in her keynote speech at the 7th Annual Wharton Women in Business (WWIB) Conference held earlier this month. Philadelphia: Historical & Hip Destination

The October issue of National Geographic Traveler christens Philadelphia as America's "Next Great City." (CNN.com highlights the article in its 28 Oct Travel section.)  National Geographic Traveler acknowledges what many Philadelphians have long known, that beyond Philly's reputation as the city of brotherly love and home to cheese steaks, lies a community rich in 19th century architecture, world class art, culture, and gastonomic delights. Philadelphia is both historical and hip.

Inside Wharton MBA Admissions: Top 10 Applicant Myths We Encounter

  • It is better to apply in Round 1 than 2. The chances of admission are comparable in both rounds. Round 3 is more selective and allows less time for international students to process visas.
  • Wharton is a finance school. Wharton is widely recognized for its breadth and depth of curriculum across 18 disciplines, each of which is taught by world renowned faculty.
  • Wharton looks for a set profile of candidate. Wharton seeks a diversity of academic, professional, geographic, and personal backgrounds. We accept many students who have neither studied business nor worked in consulting or investment banking.
  • There are minimums or cut-off scores for the GPA and GMAT. Both measures are evaluated jointly, along with measures of ability to handle quantitative coursework. The distribution of GPA and GMAT scores among admitted students is broad.
  • Work experience is a pre-requisite for admission. Candidates are evaluated on both demonstrated and potential leadership and management skills. Wharton actively encourages individuals to apply when they feel they are ready. For some, this will be directly from undergrad or with only 2-3 years of work experience.
  • Candidates are assessed on their number and/or type of extra-curricular activities and community service. We seek well-balanced students who possess a broad perspective on life. Candidates may have less formal commitments that exhibit this balance. Quality is always valued more than quantity.
  • Applications are pre-screened. All applications are read in their entirety by at least several members of the Admissions Committee. Admissions decisions are made across multiple criteria; it is the rare candidate who is denied based on one area of an application.
  • Applicants are evaluated relative to others with the same professional or geographic background. Applicants are evaluated relative to the entire pool. There are simply too many ways to disaggregate and assess candidate profiles.
  • I have a better chance of being admitted if I visit or interview on-campus. We are committed to fairness and equity and recognize that there are applicants who are unable to visit us for monetary and/or personal reasons.
  • International students are not eligible for loans or scholarships. International students are guaranteed loans for up to the student budget (tuition and living expenses) through Citibank. Other loans may be obtained and may require a cosigner. All students are eligible to apply and be considered for a fellowship.

For more details, visit our student-2-student discussion board and website section on how we evaluate applicants.

Reapplying to the Wharton MBA Program? Call for Feedback!

Applicants to the Wharton MBA Program for Fall 2004 or 2005 entry who were denied admission and plan to re-apply may contact the school to receive feedback on their application. (Sessions are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis. Please do not sign up for a session unless you plan to re-apply. We would hate to prevent serious reapplicants from having this opportunity!) Feedback sessions last 15 minutes and are conducted by an Admissions Committee member.

During the session, the results of the Admissions Committee's evaluation of an application are reviewed, including academic profile, extra-curricular activities and/or community service, professional development (e.g., leadership, management), and essays (e.g., ability to clearly articulate ideas, career goals, why an MBA, why Wharton). Other topics specific to a particular candidate may also be presented. Such topics could include application timing (is now the best time to pursue an MBA) or the "fit" of the Wharton program with an individual's personal and professional interests. The last few minutes of the feedback session are reserved for applicant questions.

No preparation is necessary for feedback sessions. The appointments are designed to provide insight into our evaluation methods and support the transparency of our admissions process. We find that re-applicants who have received feedback generally fare well in the admissions process and are admitted at a higher rate than first-time applicants. This higher rate is not by design, but because re-applicants have frequently taken steps to enhance their candidacy.

Interested and qualify for feedback? Call our office at 01.215.898.6183 to schedule a session.

Fond Farewell to s2s Icon alexbr

We regret that Alex Brown will be officially leaving the Wharton School as of tomorrow, 19 April 2005, to pursue other opportunities.  Alex has served the School for seven years.  During his tenure, he has been instrumental in developing the transparent culture in MBA Admissions with the creation of student2student as an active discussion board, this MBA Admissions Blog!, and through his oversight of e-talk (for admits). In addition, he has helped oversee and develop our marketing and technology initiatives.

Much of Wharton’s admissions successes can be directly attributed to Alex’s creative energy and determination. Because of Alex's contributions and commitment to the school, we have asked him (and he has agreed) to continue to support the admissions office in a consulting capacity over the next few months.  He will do this as he pursues other opportunities, including teaching, consulting, and his other true passion – working with race horses.

With Alex’s departure you will notice other familiar admissions faces participating in the Wharton MBA online community.  You will interact with adcoms Michel Belden, Michael Cronin, Mae Jennifer Shores, and Judith Silverman. And, of course, there is the ever-popular Sharon Brooks of Financial Aid and Naomi Tschoegl of the MBA Program Office. As we follow the momentum begun by Alex Brown, we will do so with the fondest of memories. Let’s all wish Alex the best!

Round 2 decisions this week.

We will be releasing round 2 decisions this week, thursday, March 24 at 9 AM (US east coast time).  At that time the status of round 2 applicants who were interviewed, and round 1 waitlist candidates, will be updated.  An e-mail will also be sent out (typically about 30 minutes later) to alert everyone to check their status, but there is clearly no need to wait for the e-mail.  There will likely be applicants in the student-2-student chatroom waiting for the decision release if you are looking for someone 'company' (in fact there may well be people chatting all night wednesday night!).  Subsequent to the decisions being released, we will make every effort to call all those who were admitted to offer personal congratulations, but this will not begin until the decisions are released. For those on the waitlist from round 1, you may be admitted at this point, be asked to remain on the waitlist, or denied from the waitlist.  If you are asked to remain on the waitlist, you will be re-reviewed for the admissions during the round 3 process.

Round 3 Numbers

It looks like we will have about 600 applications for round 3 when processing has finished. This will put us at about 5670 for the year, down about 1% from last year.

Interviewing On-Campus, Friday, February 25

Despite the inclement weather, the admissions office will still be open for interviews (for those in the area, or who have already traveled to Philadelphia). If you were planning to interview on-campus, but are unable, please cancel the interview (online) and reschedule with an alumni in your area. Sorry for the inconvenience the weather may cause!

Round 2 Interviews

For those interviewing in Round 2, we no longer have any availability for on-campus and hub interviews. We also want to assure all interviewees that the type of interview has no bearing on the outcome (i.e. we do not prefer you to perform one type of interview over another).

Also, if you had wanted to visit campus for your interview, please feel free to visit campus for sure. You could consider scheduling an alumni interview for that date, with an alumni interviewer in Philadelphia. It should also be reiterated that we do not judge a candidate's merits and commitment for the school based on whether the candidate has visited the school. The school visit is more a benefit for those wanting to learn their fit for the school.

Round 2 Application Numbers

Much like for Round 1 application numbers for Round 2 were very close to last year, approximately 3300 for this round, which was within 0.5% of last year's total for the round. It is looking like this year will be flat compared to last year in terms of application numbers.

Post Decision Release

It is always an exciting time of year for an admissions office when we release decisions, knowing that for some people this is a decision they have been waiting for for a very long time. Of course there are as many, if not more, who receive news that is not what they were hoping. Candidates' responses to the decisions invariably testify to the strength of the entire applicant pool, not just the portion we are able to admit. Thus we would like to wish best of luck to Durba, PowerYogi, onmywaymba, swoop, The Raver LA and all those who were not offered admissions to Wharton this year in Round 1.

The following blog does a very good job of outlining the issues for those who were not offered admissions at this stage.

Holiday closing and coverage

Please note, for the holiday period, Wharton MBA Admissions will be closed from 2 PM Thursday, December 23rd, and will reopen 9 AM on Monday, January 3rd. We understand this is an important time for those preparing Round 2 applications (deadline January 6, 5 PM EST) and will make every effort to respond to discussion board and e-mail queries within 48 hours over this period.  Please also review the following resources that should answer most of the questions regarding using the online application system and completing an application:

https://admissions.wharton.upenn.edu/Admissions/Application/instructions.cfm (online application instructions)

https://admissions.wharton.upenn.edu/Admissions/Application/faq.cfm (online application FAQ)

http://s2s.wharton.upenn.edu/wh-wharton (student 2 student discussion board)

If mailing application materials, the Post Office and express mail carriers all know we are closed for the holiday.  They will hold onto our incoming mail, delivering it on January 3rd when we return.

R1 Decisions date moved to Tuesday December 21, 9 AM

We have decided to move the decision-release date for Round 1 applicants, who were interviewed, to Tuesday, December 21.  Decisions will be released at the usual time, 9 AM.  At that time, an applicant will receive an e-mail notifying the status update, but the important thing to note is the online status will be updated at that time.  We will be sending out an e-mail today, to all those who interviewed in R1, notifying them of this change.

Asking R1 candidates for feedback to help R2 candidates and Wharton

One of the issues we face with our R2 deadline (early January) is that many R2 applicants are busy completing their online applications over the holiday period, a time when many Wharton staff try to get away for a little down time.  We are trying to limit the number of questions we will undoubtedly receive over the holiday period by scrutinizing our online instructions page and online FAQ so they truly answered the types of questions that inevitably arise.  To accomplish this we have just added some information about how to replace a recommender (without the need to contact Wharton) and noted the problems with the 'Print Application' formatting.   If you (as a R1 applicant) can think of other issues you wished we had covered, could you please add them to the comments so we can work them into our online resources before the holidays ?

Wharton MBA Admissions Director moving on!

Rose Martinelli, current Admissions Director for Wharton's MBA Program, has decided to move closer to home and will be joining Chicago's GSB May 1.  This will, of course, have no impact on our current admissions cycle as Rose continues to focus her energies on bringing in the best class.  As Vice Dean Anjani Jain noted, in the Wharton Journal article announcing the move:

"With her passion and commitment, she has earned the warmth and admiration of her colleagues and the thousands of students whom she guided through the admissions process. Rose is determined to make this academic year the strongest of her tenure at Wharton and I hope you will help her accomplish that in whatever capacity you can."

Wharton Diaries

The following blog entry from GODIDIGO highlights the Wharton Diaries and more specifically Helen Chiang's entries.

The Wharton diary project evolved out of student 2 student, where Laura Bennett posted her daily Wharton experience (this is now archived and available on the diary project). As you explore the diary interface you should be able to see some decent usability which I think is a lot less common among blog applications (to date). For example, printing multiple entries from a search result allows you to read offline the experiences over the long term for a particular diarist.

The diary project is designed for users to get an unedited feel for what life is like at the Wharton School's MBA program. We hope you find this is the case. Please post any comments for suggestions and feedback about the diaries.

Round 1 numbers, an early indicator for the season.

We now have the numbers to report from round 1, we received about 1750 applications, which is up about 2% from the previous year's total for round 1. The round was about one week earlier than last year, although I am not too sure how much impact an earlier round has on volume. It does seem that this suggests application volumes for the year will be similar to last year, with the potential for a little growth, but we will have to wait and see what happens in the later rounds (round 2 being typically the largest round).

'community' of round 1 applicants and final submission details

As round 1 is approaching (less than 48 hours) a 'community' of round 1 applicants is forming at student 2 student.

It may become a useful place to share thoughts on the process, interview experiences, why business school or whatever else a group of applicants will have in common.

For those who have not yet submitted for round 1, but plan to (that is most of round 1 applicants at this stage), then a couple of things:

  • it is important that the online application is submitted by the 5 pm deadline, this can be done independent of whether the online recommendations have been submitted online (if using online recommendations)..

  • it is important that online recommendations are submitted online by the 5 pm deadline (do not worry whether the system has updated immediately, the important thing is they are submitted.

  • it is important that any mail-in materials that are sent (many of you won't need to send any mail-in materials) are received by the 5 PM deadline. It will take probably up to a week or two to match any mail-in materials to the online application, and we do not begin the matching process until the online application has been submitted.
Good luck!

GMAT percentiles change?

If you have asked ETS to resend your GMAT scores, you may notice that the GMAT percentiles on your score may have changed (a little) from the percentiles initially reported when you took the test. The reason for the change is simply that the percentiles are measured against the entire test taking population, which does include those who have taken the test since you had done so.

In terms of which percentiles to self-report in your application, either will be fine, but it is probably best to report the percentiles of the scores you had submitted to Wharton such that matching the scores is very straightforward.

Welcome to MBA Admissions Blog.

This blog is designed to help answer questions that arise from the application process of applying full-time MBA programs. While it is managed by Wharton admissions, we will also cover topics relevant to applying to multiple schools. We invite applicants to request topics (simply e-mail alexbr@wharton.upenn.edu). We will also pull topics from questions that arise on Student-2-Student.

You can also keep up to date with other applicant blogs and blogs from those in School (right hand navigation). If you have a blog that fits one of these categories, it has an RSS feed and would like it added it to these lists, please e-mail. Current content from Wharton Diaries, Student-2-Student and Knowledge@Wharton appear on the left hand navigation. We hope that aggregating content in this way will help make this blog a useful 'content management' portal for MBA applicants, while updating with our own admissions-related articles.
